About
Innovative technologies that promote service delivery of public services and economic growth play an increasingly important role in Africa's continued growth. For technology solutions to truly take hold it is critical for local programmers to be central in the process. The Rural Technology Lab (RTL) is a partnership between Microsoft, The Earth Institute at Columbia University and MDG Center West Africa to build the next generation of programmers and innovators starting in Mali.
Through daily hands-on-training and mentoring by experienced programmers, students are exposed to important mobile and web 2.0 technologies and taught to program as a team using best practices including agile and scrum. Student teams are then expected to apply these skills to build and deploy applications that help address specific real world problems identified by the Millennium Village Projects.
